When it comes to exercise there is definitely no one sized fits all program. We are all very unique! Our bodies are different and we will react to exercise differently, so what works for one person may not have the same effects for another and can actually be dangerous. For this reason it is essential that we all complete individualised exercise programs.
Factors that determine your ideal exercise program
When designing an exercise program certain key factors will determine your what exercises will be safe and help you improve your health in a program.
- Medical history (including medications)
- Exercise history
- Current fitness levels
- Goals
- Likes and Dislikes (exercise related)
A person with osteoporosis and a pacemaker will need different exercises to someone with osteoarthritis and knee pain. With this in mind, in order to get the most out of an exercise program you should see an Accredited Exercise Physiologist who can perform an assessment with you. They can review your medical history, perform exercise testing to see your current level of strength, balance, flexibility and aerobic fitness and also discuss your goals with you and ways to help achieve them.
